This week, I learned some of the value of this approach. To paraphrase our former Dean, economists should always predict doom and gloom. If you're right, everyone's prepared, thankful and awed by your powers. If you're wrong, they’re too happy to point out your error.
In the case of doctors, when they aggressively diagnose, they may scare the crap out of a family, but they also quickly get them in to see an ophthalmologist and a cardiologist. By Thursday afternoon you've found strep infection and gotten started with antiobiotics. By Friday, you've ruled out rheumatic fever and all 7 types of JIA and by Saturday, A's at a favorites dance with nary a swollen joint in sight (albeit Dad would cool if your dress obscured a couple more joints) and we're out for dinner, drinks and even a little live music performance.
What a week.
